The device has two screens, so it gets two screenshot formats: one for the outer display and one for the inner display. Apple has not said whether they will be required. Expect them to matter for featuring, though, because Apple’s editors tend to highlight apps that look native on new hardware. The same update added specs for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch Series 12.

Action: check how your app’s layout behaves on the inner display before you design anything. A screenshot set for a near-square screen needs different framing than one for a tall phone, so brief your designer now and be ready when uploads open.

App Store: one set of EU business terms

From October 1, 2026, every developer distributing apps in the EU moves to a single set of Apple business terms. Apple announced the change on August 18 after talks with the European Commission. The per-install Core Technology Fee is gone, replaced by a 5% Core Technology Commission on digital sales in apps distributed outside the App Store.

Standard EU commission rates from October 1, 2026

Reduced rates (15% for Apple In-App Purchase, 10% for alternative payments and 10% for link-outs) apply to Small Business Program members, some partner programs and auto-renewing subscriptions after the first year. For the first time in the EU, you can offer Apple In-App Purchase alongside alternative payment options in the same app.

Commission rates change your ROAS math. A lower effective take rate per sale raises the install cost you can afford, which changes how much paid and keyword promotion budget a European market can carry.

Action: model EU revenue three ways (all in-app purchase, all link-out, and a mix) and update your target cost per install for EU markets before your Q4 budget is locked. This is not financial or legal advice, so confirm the details with your finance team.

App Store: iOS 27 brings new creative assets

iOS 27 reached the public on September 14, and App Store Connect started accepting builds made with Xcode 27 and the iOS 27 SDK the same day (App Store Connect release notes). Three changes in this release affect your listing.

1. New creative assets. The visual formats Apple announced in August, a product page header and a search results visual, arrive with iOS 27. They give you space for brand, seasonal and new-content imagery, not only in-app screenshots. Specs are on Apple’s creative assets specifications page. Search results become more visual as a result, so creative quality now matters as much as keyword coverage.

2. Social media age rating question. Apple’s September Hello Developer newsletter asks developers to declare in the age rating questionnaire whether their app offers social media features. Answers are required for new apps and updates from September 2026. The answer feeds the Time Allowances parental control in iOS 27, and apps with feeds or user-generated content can end up rated 13+.

3. Korea rating change. Starting in October 2026, two content descriptors (infrequent profanity or crude humor, and infrequent mature or suggestive themes) move from All ages to 12+ on the Korean App Store.

Product page headers on the App Store
Source

One smaller update: since September 16, you can submit localized Apple-hosted asset packs, which helps games that ship region-specific content.

Action: answer the new age rating questions before your next Q4 update, not during it. If any feature could count as a feed, decide now whether to restrict it for users under 13, because the rating shows on your product page.

Google Play: a full retention funnel

In September, Play Console added Day 2, 3, 14 and 28 retention metrics next to the existing Day 7 metric. They live on the Statistics page under the Retention group and support every console dimension, including traffic source.

This matters for ASO because you can now split retention by where users came from. If users from search keep using the app at Day 14 but users from Explore drop off, your listing may be promising that group something the product does not deliver.

Illustrative retention curve split by traffic source

On the user side, Play Store version 53.1, released September 7, added a new navigation bar on Play home pages that lets people browse by interest. More interest-based browsing means more installs that start outside keyword search, so your category choice and visual assets carry more weight.

A reminder from July still applies: store listing reports now count unique user clicks on Install, Open or Pre-register instead of acquisitions. Any Q4 comparison with last year needs a note about this on the chart.

Action: build a retention-by-traffic-source view for Day 2 and Day 14, and compare it with your conversion rate for each source. A source that converts well but retains badly points to a listing message problem, not a traffic problem.

Google Play: added a three new tools

Google Play gave listing owners three new tools in September. Two of them are available only to select developers for now.

1. Buyer-state targeting. Custom store listings can now be targeted by purchase history (non-buyers, one-time buyers, repeat buyers and lapsed buyers), and these listings can be A/B tested with store listing experiments. The experiments themselves are not new. What is new is the audience you can test against: a lapsed buyer needs a reason to come back, and a first-time visitor needs a reason to try.

2. Immersive cover image. Some apps now see a new asset under Main store listing > Graphics: a full-width gallery at the very top of the listing, above the screenshots. It takes up to 5 images per device, 1440 x 1440 px for phones and 3840 x 1646 px for tablets, in PNG or JPEG up to 8 MB each. Frames and fake buttons are not allowed, and games are not supported yet (Play Console Help).

3. Promotional content. This section of Play Console now shows card performance over longer periods and previews each card in the Drive and Live views. Google also notifies you when an event is picked for featuring. Every event goes through a quality review, automated or manual, and if Google needs more information, it contacts you within 24 hours. These changes appeared in Play Console without a public announcement.

Action: check Play Console for the new targeting option and the cover image fields, then submit your Q4 events early enough to clear review before Black Friday.

Google Play: memory use will affect visibility

Starting in February 2027, apps and games that exceed Google Play’s new memory thresholds may see reduced store visibility and limits on publishing. Google announced this on August 26. The rule works like the existing Android vitals thresholds for crashes and ANRs, with three new metrics: dynamic memory, bitmap memory and DEX code optimization.

New memory metrics in Android vitals
Source

The tools to check this are already rolling out. Android vitals now shows dynamic and bitmap memory metrics, the Crashes and ANRs page has a filter for out-of-memory terminations, and each new app bundle shows DEX optimization insights. Google says the exact thresholds may change and more details will follow later this year.

The same announcement adds a second rule. From April 2027, apps that support sign-in must restore the user’s login automatically when they move to a new Android device, using the Restore Credentials API (Google calls this Zero-Tap Sign-In). Games are exempt for now. Visibility penalties tied to technical quality hit organic rankings directly, and no metadata fix can offset them. Four months is not much time for a memory refactor.

Action: open Android vitals this week, check your app against the new memory metrics, and put a fix on your developer’s Q4 roadmap if you are close to the line.

To sum up

Most of September’s changes come down to six tasks, ordered by how soon they matter.

Answer Apple’s new social media age rating questions before your next iOS update.

Model EU revenue under the October 1 terms and update your EU cost-per-install targets.

Check Play Console for the immersive cover image fields and buyer-state listing targeting.

Submit Q4 promotional content events early enough to clear the quality review.

Open Android vitals and check memory, bitmap and DEX metrics against the February 2027 thresholds.

Brief a separate iPhone Duo screenshot set for the inner and outer displays.

Last month we launched Keyapp MCP, which connects AI assistants such as Claude to your Keyapp account.
